Daytime Program Speaker
Conference Coordinator, Shipwreck Photographer, and Videographer
David Mekker, a long-standing member of the Niagara Divers' Association, and is Chair of their annual Shipwrecks Symposium. He has held that position for the last twelve years, and has been instrumental in bringing what began as a small show to the successful world-class event it is today.
Dave was certified in 1989, trained in Nitrox and Cave diving in 1992, and has since moved into deep and Trimix diving, with over 1,200 logged dives. His enthusiasm and "drive to dive" led him into underwater photography in 1992. His photography has centered around Great Lakes shipwrecks, resulting in awards at events such as the Ford Seahorses Great Lakes Film Festival. In 2000, Dave discovered a new passion for underwater videography - this will be his second presentation at Shipwrecks.and Scuba
David Mekker and Durrell Martin met in 1994 while diving in Kingston, Ontario. While David had already been diving since 1989 and was fully Cave certified, Durrell was new to the sport with just 60 dives in his logbook.
The two of them discovered that weekend that they shared a passion for both shipwrecks and photography. Over the next 24 years, they have done over 1,000 dives together exploring the history of the great lakes.
In 2003 along with their mentor, the late Joyce Hayward they formed White Wind Productions to produce presentations on Great Lakes Shipwrecks.
Their first project “Getting to Know a Ship”, was based on the site survey that Dave and Durrell did on the wreck of the Cornelia B Windiate in Alpena Michigan.
