Maggie & Marty Bailey
Daytime Program Speakers
Maggie Bailey is a retired school librarian with an unending thirst for travel. What makes Maggie's adventures unique is that her interests constantly changed.
Growing up, Maggie's family explored the United States until all 50 states had been visited. Then, it was off to Europe which eventually included a junior year of university in Switzerland followed by many more trips to Europe. When the Underground Railroad became a topic of interest, she became the photographer for a local group which provided entrance to many fascinating sites within Ohio. After this interest came the Titanic. Maggie went to sea for a week on one of George Tulloch's expeditions to recover artifacts from the famous wreck, followed by trips to Belfast and Halifax. Intrigued by the Nazca Lines, she traveled to Peru, opening an interest in mysteries in history. Next, Maggie's interest moved to the Middle East. Trips to Jordan and Turkey defied description, and with 11 trips to Egypt, she will always be tied to the Middle East. Following in her grandmother's footsteps she explored Dubrovnik, Cinque Terre, Bulgaria, and Costa Rica.
But Maggie's biggest life-changing adventure was an interest in scuba diving. In the process of becoming certified, she met Marty Bailey, and eventually they married. Maggie and Marty have made many diving trips around the world including Roatan, Hawaii, Bermuda, Cay Sal Banks, Cozumel, Truk Lagoon, Bonaire, and the Underwater Hotel in Key Largo. Now Maggie prefers to leave the diving to Marty, however, travel continues. Iceland, Alaska, Aruba, England, New Zealand, Malta...who knows where her next interest will land.
Marty Bailey, SCUBA instructor, lecturer, and expert technical diver, has explored the underwater world from the frigid fissures of Iceland in the North Atlantic to the WWII wrecks of Micronesia in the South Pacific. With over 4,500 logged dives, and his dedication as an OSU dive instructor since 1988, Marty is invaluable to Ohio State's outstanding aquatics program.
